Create a Focal Point

Many of us get utterly confused while placing furniture. Especially in an empty room. You don’t know where to start. You want a handle to begin your layout. Well, use the concept of a focal point. It could be a photo on a wall, a large window with a view of the park or even a standard display storage. Place that item in such a way that it becomes the centre of attraction in the room. The positioning should be such that the eye will automatically travel to that item when one enters the room. You can then start weaving the rest of the furniture with regard to the focal point.

Keep it Simple - Keep it Big

With space becoming a constraint many people are being compelled to work with less space. So it becomes necessary to provide a feeling of openness even in small spaces. One of the easiest methods of achieving this is by removing clutter. Avoid keeping thing you don’t need. And if you have something which is very important to you but you use it rarely make it a point to stack it inside a covered shelf. This way you will not only retain the thing you need but also not allow visual clutter.

Highlight Staircase

Many people live in old houses with a grand stairway. A little ingenuity and skill can turn an ordinary staircase into a thing of beauty. Flooring, railings, ceiling decor and lighting can all enable to impart a look that matches your overall theme.

But the key element here is restraint. Do not overdo things or else the place will lose all its identity and charm. Remember the old saying “less is more”.

A Good Design is the Start

Many are overwhelmed with design. According to them design is everything. Agreed, no great interiors can be made without a complete and effective design. But the overriding factor in bringing out the essence of a good design is execution. And that really can make even the tiniest of spaces come alive with an ample-room spacious feeling.

In your execution, take care of the details. The finer details. How the corners are executed. How the colours blend in the room. Which furniture creates clutter and which create a feeling of space.  Move away from the tested path and try a new way of utilising space.

Lampshades

Lampshades Can Enhance

Lampshades have this ability to transform the dynamics of your room. The play of subdues, diffused lighting coupled with the play of shadows create wondrous effect on your interiors. Here is a short check list :

When choosing a shade, remember that the shade should follow the contours of the lamp. For example, if your lamp has a round base, consider a round shade and so on.

Also consider the level of light that you need. A lighter shade will appear brighter, while a darker shade will create mood lighting as it lets less light through.

Corners

Most people neglect corners. Or use it to dump discards in them. This results in a clutter that is difficult to clean. To avoid this  keep your corners as clean as possible with just one or two visual elements that blend with the overall theme of your room. Achieving this is not difficult as long as you remember that the items you place around the corner must blend with the rest of the items in the room and should not look out of place or incongruous.

Pendant Lights

Sometimes using a row of lights work better in highlighting nondescript zones.  Carefully placed pendant lights can lend character to an otherwise dull place. Best placed near dimly lit areas these pendants with low powered lights placed in a row bring up the illumination level enough to accentuate the dull area and also lend general lighting to the room.

Try out in areas that would need illumination and do not use in brightly lit rooms.

Island Zone

For all those who have a very large kitchen space and wish to bring a level of warmth in that area use ornate and boxy cabinetry. Use of colour coordinated counter tops add to the warmth. Incorporate an island storage cum service zone in the central part of the kitchen. Remember, the larger the kitchen the more elaborate you can go on your design element. Ceiling lights not only offer comfortable general lighting but also keep the walls exclusively for appliances and power connections.

Tiny Room Makeover

Here is an example of makeover of a tiny room. Barely enough for one to move around look how skillfully this room has been modified. The room not only takes care of a reasonable storage space but also leaves some room for free movement.

Notice the clever use of a full wall glass window with blinds and a cladding which also serves as a light source. Additional elements placed on one wall defines the key direction in the room and gives it a feeling of space.

Utilise Your Window

The space at the bottom of a window is usually wasted as a blank wall.  While blank walls are essential to the breathe of a room, sometimes utilising this space as a storage area cum worktop ledge does help in the overall  space in small rooms.

But try it with caution. Too narrow will make the space unusable as a storage and too wide will kill the space for a walkabout. So think well before executing this.

Close to the Counter

One good thing to remember is to place all your Kitchen appliances close to the kitchen counter. That way, you will not hunt for a tabletop with a boiling hot bowl of curry in your hand.

So be it your oven or your microwave or any other large appliance remember to keep it close to your kitchen counter where accessibility is easy and unencumbered.
